Golf Dunas de Doñana is the first fully ecological golf course. Its project has restored a despoiled piece of land to turn it into an area of high environmental value. Due to this intervention, the indigenous vegetation has recovered, and the fauna typical for the National Park – especially birds, have settled. The course is located in the close proximity of Europe’s most important natural park, El Coto de Doñana

The environmental guidelines have been very well applied, during the design and construction phase, as well as in the present maintenance stage.

During construction, only the minimum soil was removed, allowing the course to adapt perfectly to the existing landscape. Additionally, the indigenous vegetation has been preserved by fitting it into the design of the course and thus making it the predominant feature of Golf Dunas de Doñana. The design and construction of the lakes considered a beach-identical shoreline in order to facilitate the growth of plants that allow water birds’ nesting and spawning of fishes.

During the present maintenance stage, the following aspects are most important:

           - Water supply: water is the most important aspect in the maintenance of a golf course. All water used for grass irrigation on the golf course is supplied by the residual water purifying station in Matalascañas. This water-treatment plant pioneers in a water-purifying method that complements the usual tertiary treatment. This treatment is denominated ultra filtration or filtration by membrane. It allows the storage of the resulting water without the any risk of smells.

           - Rational use of irrigation water: the pumping station as well as the regulation mechanisms and the distribution net are constantly checked in order to avoid unnecessary consumption. The continuous control of the humidity level of the plot helps controlling the irrigation water’s dynamics according to depths, thus optimising it.

           - Grass maintenance: in order to avoid a diffuse contamination, low doses of non-persistent products are used. We employ slow-liberation fertilizers that do not produce erosion. Additionally, the use of pesticides for pest and disease control is limited to a minimum. Moreover, we apply alternative methods for pest control like biological and integrated techniques.

           - Waste management: this point is contemplated in the Action Plan for Waste. Waste is directed to selective-treatment plants.

Currently the introduction of the Etiquette Doñana 21 is in process. This environmental management system guarantees a well-balanced environmental protection according to socio-economical needs.
